Star midfielder Jimmy Bartel has signed a one-year contract extension with Geelong which could see him become just the fourth Cat to reach the 300-game AFL milestone.

Bartel, 31, who won the 2007 Brownlow Medal and was a key member of the Cats' 2007, 2009 and 2011 premiership teams, has played 283 games.

After overcoming an early-season knee injury, Bartel made a strong finish to the 2015 campaign, claiming an equal career-best 41 possessions against North Melbourne in round 15.

"Jimmy played good consistent football this year and we expect more of the same in 2016," said the Cats' general manager of football Steve Hocking.

"He bounced back from injury well and can play a multitude of roles for us.

"He has shown that adaptability over the years and continues to do so."

The three members of the Cats' 300 club are Ian Nankervis, John Newman and Bartel's long-time teammate Corey Enright, who has also agreed to play on in 2016.

Another key member of Geelong's triple flag-winning era, retired fullback Matthew Scarlett, has had his coaching role at the club upgraded to a full-time position as development coach.

"Everyone was impressed by the work Scarlo did with our young players," said Hocking.

"We saw great progress from many of our younger players and Matthew was a big part of this.

"He came back in a part-time role but his work ethic meant he was here much more than expected, and the benefits were there to see."
