Geelong ace Jimmy Bartel will miss Sunday's AFL clash with Fremantle due to concussion.

Bartel needed to be helped from the MCG last Monday after being knocked out in a tackle from Hawthorn's Taylor Duryea.

The club confirmed on Friday that Bartel would take no part in the weekend's fixture at Simonds Stadium.

The 2007 Brownlow medallist had been named in the Cats' initial squad, pending a concussion test.

Bartel trained on Thursday and the club had been optimistic he would be fit on Sunday.

"The early indications are that he's going to be fine, but it's in the hands of our medical staff," coach Chris Scott said on Thursday.
