The Chief Justice of the NSW Supreme Court, Tom Bathurst, has downplayed his own contribution to the law while acknowledging "the tireless effort and dedication" of others who work within the court system.
Chief Justice Bathurst says he is both honoured and humble to have been appointed a Companion in the Order of Australia in the latest round of Queens Birthday Honours.
"Compared to other recipients there is little I have done to deserve it," he said.
"However, its conferral does recognise the importance of the judiciary's role in the preservation of a just and civilised society."
Chief Justice Bathurst was appointed to the order for eminent service to the judiciary and to the law, to the development of the legal profession, particularly through the implementation of uniform national rules of conduct, and to the community of NSW.
Chief Justice Bathurst, who was born in Surrey, England on St Patrick's Day in 1948. He was admitted in NSW as a solicitor in 1972 and 15 years later graduated to Queen's Council.
He was appointed chief justice of the NSW Supreme Court in June, 2011.
"I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the tireless effort and dedication of those who work within the court system to deliver justice to those who come before it and particularly to my colleagues in the Supreme Court whose tireless and dedicated work I have the privilege of seeing on a daily basis," Chief Justice Bathurst said.
The former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, Ewan Crawford, was also appointed to the order, for eminent service to the judiciary and to the law, to the development of the legal profession, to tertiary education, and to the community of Tasmania.
