Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has been ruled out of the Bundesliga derby at Nuremberg after undergoing surgery on a burst blood vessel in his buttock.

Bayern says on its website the minor operation became necessary at short notice on Thursday "because bruising associated with the damage was affecting a nerve".

Ribery will remain in hospital until Sunday, with medics carrying out an examination the following day to determine the length of his layoff.

Bayern plays Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie on February 19.

Bayern coach Pep Guardiola says, "Hopefully he'll be able to play in London".

Ribery has scored 60 goals and set up 88 more in 170 Bundesliga games for Bayern since joining the club in 2007.
