NSW mentor Trevor Bayliss will serve as acting Australian cricket team coach for the T20 matches against South Africa which open the home international summer.

Bayliss has been called on to give regular coach Darren Lehmann a week-long break to prepare for the big matches ahead including the Test series against India and one-day cricket World Cup.

The T20 matches against South Africa in early November fall just days after Lehmann returns from the tour to the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan.

"Trevor has obviously coached at international level before and more recently has coached NSW to a Sheffield Shield title," said Cricket Australia team performance manager Pat Howard in a CA statement on Monday.

"He has won the BBL and Champions League Twenty20 with the Sixers and an IPL title with Kolkata, so we know that while Darren is away the team will be in good hands."

Lehmann welcomed the move.

"We've got an absolutely huge period coming up," said Lehmann.

"As soon as the tour to Zimbabwe starts in late August this year, we won't then finish until after the 2015-16 Australian summer in March 2016; it's pretty much non-stop.

"So with that in mind it's important as head coach that we plan and prepare as well as we possibly can ... the players might actually enjoy having a different voice for these matches."

Cricket NSW has granted Bayliss leave from his Blues duties for the week which will likely coincide with an early round of the Sheffield Shield.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity to work with some of Australia's best T20 players," Bayliss said.
