BBC radio presenter David Lowe has lost his job after playing a song that contained a racist word.

Mr Lowe worked for the BBC for 32 years and his "Golden Oldies" show on Radio Devon had a loyal following.

But when he played an 82-year-old version of the song "The Sun Has Got Its Hat On," he had no idea it contained a racist lyric.

Mr Lowe apologised to senior staff and offered to stand down.

His bosses accepted his offer to stand down and did not give him the opportunity to apologise, on air.

"I just want to say to my listeners that I’m going to miss you, and I'm sorry," an emotional Mr Lowe said.

"It was a silly error on my part and I've paid the price and I'm sorry that they've had to pay the price too."

Mr Lowe said he refused to agree that an announcement should be made saying he had left to pursue other interests.

The BBC later issued a statement saying: "The discussion with David Lowe could have been handled better. His resignation should not have been accepted."
