Be brave on budget, Shorten tells govt MPs

Coalition MPs should speak out about their budget concerns, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten says.

Labor leader Bill Shorten is urging worried members of the coalition government to be brave and speak out on their concerns about the budget.

Mr Shorten on Monday pointed to reports saying government MPs and senators were concerned about the budget, but criticised them for only having conversations among themselves or off-the-record with journalists.

"Today, Labor is asking all those coalition members of parliament - don't be brave in the privacy of your own room where no one can hear you speak," Mr Shorten told reporters in Canberra.

"There's millions of Australians who want you to tell the prime minister how dreadfully unfair his budget is."
