Beijing airs asylum seeker concerns

Australia's treatment of asylum seekers has been questioned by China's foreign ministry.

China has questioned Australia's treatment of asylum seekers, and is the second nation in days to raise concerns.

News from Beijing quotes the Asian superpower's foreign affairs vice-minister, Li Baodong, highlighting the issue during a meeting with Australian officials on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters later, Mr Li said China's concern stretched to "the protection of refugees and asylum seekers, the rights of the children of refugees and education and also other rights".

"We have also asked about whether these refugees will be illegally repatriated to other countries," an ABC translator said of Mr Li's comments.

The criticism comes two days after Iranian authorities expressed "protest and discontent" about the "practice of violence and mistreatment" in Australian-run detention centres.

A 24-year-old Iranian man in detention at Australia's Manus Island facility was killed during violent riots on Monday.

Australian ambassador Paul Foley was called in by Iranian officials and asked for the details of an investigation into the death, while expressing a desire that the treatment of asylum seekers change.
