Ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, Sweden’s women’s football team will be wearing limited edition jerseys replacing the player’s names with inspirational quotes.

Sweden’s Football Association said the campaign is aimed at inspiring and motivating women and girls, “to show that anything is possible".

“Never look down on someone, unless it's to help her up,” one jersey reads, a quote from a progressive feminist Swedish political leader.

Team captain Lotta Schelin said: “There is always a need to demonstrate to young girls that you can succeed, you can do what you want regardless, and you should not feel limited in any way, and especially not on the basis of sex.”

The campaign – branded “in your name” – is backed by football association sponsor Adidas, which will sell limited edition versions of the jerseys.
Up to 10 per cent of revenue will be donated to a women’s sport organisation.

“We’re hoping [the initiative] can inspire people to stand up for each other and for themselves, regardless of who you are or where you’re coming from,”said Niklas Bodell, a spokesperson for the Swedish Football Association.
