St George Illawarra halfback Benji Marshall will meet with specialists to determine whether he needs surgery on his injured ankle.

Scans confirmed on Thursday that the 30-year-old had suffered a high ankle sprain as a result of a Greg Eastwood tackle in the Dragons' NRL golden-point elimination final loss to Canterbury last Saturday.

Regardless of whether surgery is required, Marshall will not be required to line up for New Zealand in their end-of-year Test series against Great Britain in November.

Marshall was controversially overlooked for a playmaker role despite regular halfback Shaun Johnson also being grounded with an ankle injury.
