Bennett rejects Morgan Origin calls

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has rejected calls for in-form Cowboys five-eighth Michael Morgan to be selected for Queensland.

It was the million dollar question - where would you put Michael Morgan in the current Queensland team?

The North Queensland five-eighth has been demanding consideration in 2015 and he gave selectors another headache after his performance in the Cowboys' 31-20 win over Brisbane on Friday night.

Playing under the duress of an ankle complaint, Morgan was outstanding and his three tries stole the game from their Queensland rival.

But Broncos supercoach Wayne Bennett is not joining the chorus of those seeking his inclusion in the Queensland set up.

"Who's place is he going to take?" he asked.

"They're not going to take him as a utility, he'll only play one position, that's not utility."

Morgan offers far more depth than that.

He has won a premiership at Queensland Cup level in the centres and played at fullback for the Cowboys in their run to the 2014 finals in the absence of Lachlan Coote.

And he has also spent time at hooker in his 66 NRL games when coming off the bench.

His form this season has been irresistible and the 23-year-old is putting serious pressure on Daly Cherry-Evans for the bench utility spot.

Cowboys skipper Johnathan Thurston said Morgan wouldn't look out of place if selected.

"He's pushing all the right buttons," he said.

"It's a decision for Mal (Meninga) and the selectors to make but he wouldn't look out of place there.

"He can cover a lot of positions. He's an ideal utility player, he can play on an edge, in the centres, halves, fullback.

"I'm sure he will be in Mal's plans in the future."

Morgan, though, is keeping his head out of the clouds.

"To be talked about like that is very humbling," he said.

"It's something that I never really thought of. I think the Queensland team ... with how it's been the last eight years, picks itself.

"With the success that they've had over the years there is no reason why they shouldn't be loyal.

"I'm honestly not expecting anything like that (selection)."

But he did admit to soaking up plenty from his experience in Origin camp last year when brought down by coach Meninga.

"I tried to learn off other players, how they do things, what they do at training, what they say," he said.
