Berati death on Manus remembered in skies

A demand for the closure of Australia's offshore detention centres will be seen in the skies over Sydney and Canberra to mark the anniversary of the death of an Iranian asylum seeker on Manus Island.

One year after Reza Barati was killed during violent riots on Manus Island, skywriters will scribe the words "shut down Manus" over Sydney's Opera House.

"Close Nauru" will also be seen over federal parliament in Canberra following a crowd-funded campaign that raised nearly $10,000 in six days.

Mr Barati, 23, died from severe head trauma during the riots inside the Australian-run detention centre on February 17 last year.

Two men were charged over the murder and Papua New Guinea police are searching for more suspects.

A subsequent parliamentary inquiry found a processing hold-up was to blame for the riots.
