Bernardi to set up SA party

Rebel Senator Cory Bernardi says he will register a party in SA ahead of the next state election.

South Australian independent MP Cory Bernardi says he plans to register a political party in SA ahead of next year's state election.

But Senator Bernardi, who has established the Australian Conservatives, says he hasn't yet committed to running candidates in the SA poll.

"I've got until September to register a state party. My intention is to go down that path, but exactly how it's going to play out I can't confirm," he told ABC radio on Monday.

Senator Bernardi, who recently quit the Liberal Party, said his priority would be to secure representation in SA's upper house.

"So I'll look at how we can achieve that," he said.

"And maybe, in some select lower house seats, where we might be able to shape the outcome.

"I think that would be worthwhile too."

Senator Bernardi said having candidates run in SA would help counteract the agendas of rival cross bench groups including Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party and Senator Nick Xenophon's SA Best group.
