Darren Berry has taken personal leave from his role as South Australia's cricket coach.

Berry has stepped aside for an "extended period" for undisclosed reasons, with his assistant Jeff Vaughan to take over as caretaker coach, the SA Cricket Association (SACA) said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Darren has asked SACA for an extended period of personal leave and we have respected his wishes to do so," SACA's high performance manager Tim Nielsen said in a statement.

"There has been no time limit put on Darren's leave and the SACA will give him as much time as he needs.

"I would like to stress that Darren remains the coach ... and Jeff Vaughan will step into the role in a caretaker position."
