BHP says 17 confirmed dead in Brazil dam

BHP Billiton has confirmed the deaths of 17 people in the Samarco dam collapse.

Seventeen people have been confirmed dead and two people are still missing following the November dam collapse at the Samarco iron ore mine in Brazil.

BHP Billiton, which jointly operates the mine with Vale, confirmed the latest toll in a statement on Tuesday.

In its statement, BHP said the death count comprised 12 people who were working on the dams at the time of their collapse and five members of the local community.

BHP said the mine operators continue to work with authorities to relocate people forced from their homes and into temporary accommodation following the November 5 disaster.

All displaced people will be given the opportunity to relocate before Christmas day, BHP said.

"Community access bridges are being rebuilt and public service centres have been established in affected communities," the global miner said. "Planning for the reconstruction of impacted communities has also commenced."

Brazil's government has said it will sue BHP and Vale for $US5.2 billion ($A7.24 billion) over the dams' collapse.
