Biathlete Gossner out of Sochi Olympics

Double world champion biathlete Miriam Gossner of Germany is suffering persistent back pain and won't compete at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

German biathlete Miriam Gossner has pulled out of the forthcoming Winter Olympics in Sochi, suffering from persistent back pain, she announced at the World Cup meeting in Oberhof on Saturday.

"I've finally decided not to go to Sochi for the sake of my health," the tearful 23-year-old Bavarian said.

Gossner, a double world relay champion who also won Nordic relay silver in Vancouver in 2010, won her first individual World Cup event last year, but has missed three months of the season due to a lower back injury after a mountain bike accident last May.
