Big 800m PB for Griffith

Victorian duo Georgia Griffith and Luke Mathews have both set qualifiers for the world athletics championships.

Georgia Griffith has clocked the fastest time by an Australian woman over 800m in six years to book her spot on the team for the world athletics championships in August.

The 20-year-old Victorian smashed her personal best with a run of two minutes 00.90 seconds at the Portland Track Festival.

It was the fastest two-lap time by an Australian since Tamsyn Lewis-Manou in 2011.

"I think I'm in shock," said Griffith.

"I had to double-check the time to make sure that it was correct. It's amazing to have the qualifier.

I'm just so excited about what this means.

"To be in the mix for an Australian team at the world championships is a little insane and we have a home Commonwealth Games next year.

"To do this time now, then to have the chance to run at London before the Gold Coast is amazing."

At the same meet, Rio Olympian Linden Hall recorded her fastest 1500m time of the year, stopping the clock at 4:04.37.

Luke Mathews is set to square off against close friend and training partner Ryan Gregson at the world titles in London in August.

The consistent Mathews clocked a PB of 3:35.57 to finish ninth in the 1500m at the FBK Games in the Dutch town of Hengelo.

It was his second qualifier in as many races.
