Big Bang Theory renewed for three years

Popular US sitcom The Big Bang Theory will reach a 10-year milestone after being renewed for a further three years.

Hit comedy The Big Bang Theory has been renewed by US TV network CBS for a further three years.

The extraordinary deal would carry TV's most-watched sitcom through the 2016-2017 season, the series' tenth on the air.

The Big Bang Theory premiered in September 2007 and has been a ratings smash for virtually its entire run.

It has averaged nearly 20 million viewers in the US each week this season.

A comedy about science nerds and the people who love them, it stars three-time Emmy-winner Jim Parsons as well as Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting.

*The Big Bang Theory airs in Australia at 8.40pm on Tuesdays on the Nine Network.
