Australian surfing heavyweights Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow have been eliminated in their opening heats at the Cascais Pro in Portugal.

Three-time world champion Fanning was edged out by Canary Islands' Jonathan Gonzalez, who capitalised on wave-selection and four-man-heat tactics in chunky 1-to-2 metre surf on Tuesday.

Costa Rica's Carlos Munoz and Joan Duru pared back the competition further as they took out Burrow in the 13th heat.

"I've been working on my surfing and tried different boards so I'm super happy to make my heat," Munoz said.

"I had Taj in my heat which made me really go for it and I got two good waves."

Also eliminated in his first heat was Australian world No.16 Adrian Buchan, who lost out to 16-year-old Italian Leonardo Fioravanti.

Among the Australians to progress to the next round so far are Mitchel Coleborn, Connor O'Leary, Willian Cardoso, Adam Melling, Davey Cathels, Yadin Nicol, Stu Kennedy and Bede Durbidge.

The remaining first-round heats are set for Wednesday.
