Big screens reel in profit for Village

James Bond, The Hunger Games and teenage vampires on the big screen have boosted Village Roadshow's profit by more than 50 per cent.

More people are going to the movies, boosting Village Roadshow's profit by more than 50 per cent.

The film distributor and amusement park operator made a net profit of $50.9 million in the year to June 30, up 50.8 per cent on the previous year's $33.8 million.

Income increased by one per cent to $936 million, while earnings from its cinemas rose by 11.7 per cent as people flocked to the movies to watch the James Bond film Skyfall, and the final instalment of Twilight: Breaking Dawn 2.

Higher ticket, food and beverage prices driven by the expansion of its Gold Class and Max offerings also increased the money people spent at the movies.

"We are good at beating the drum and selling tickets," chief executive Graham Burke said on Thursday.

The company expects the construction of another 18 cinema complexes across Australia will attract even more customers, as will the release of high profile films such as The Hunger Games sequels.

Village is also expanding its theme parks, with WetnWild Sydney opening this December.

Another major theme park it is building on Hainan Island in China is scheduled to open by the end of 2014.

Earnings from its theme parks - including eight attractions on the Gold Coast - grew by 2.3 per cent, which the company said had slowed due to poor weather during summer.

Meanwhile, its film distribution arm was hampered by challenging retail conditions, particularly in DVD sales, and earnings fell by nine per cent.

However, digital distribution grew by 50 per cent via video-on-demand services such as iTunes and Foxtel, exceeding the digital market's overall growth of 30 per cent.

"The digital division may one day take the company over, you never know," said Mr Burke.

Village Roadshow shares rose once cent, or 0.16 per cent, at $6.21 on Thursday.
