Big win for Vixens over the Fever

Tegan Caldwell has led the Melbourne Vixens to a 19-goal win over the West Coast Fever in the trans-Tasman netball championship.

Despite the excitement of breaking into the Australian Diamonds squad, Melbourne goal attack Tegan Caldwell remains focused on chasing trans-Tasman championship glory with the Vixens before turning her attention to Glasgow.

The decision to pick Caldwell ahead of Erin Bell or Susan Pratley in the Commonwealth Games squad has caused some debate, but the 25-year-old went a long way to repaying the selectors' faith with an MVP performance for the Vixens in their 65-46 victory over the West Coast Fever on Sunday.

Caldwell shot 37 goals from 43 attempts, receiving valuable support from Karyn Bailey (20 from 27).

"I was happy with today but there are still things that I can improve on," said Caldwell.

"I threw away a couple of balls that I shouldn't.

"I'm honoured to be named in the Australian Commonwealth Games team but for me, it's Vixens focused over the next few weeks."

The 19-goal win will keep the Vixens in top spot on the ladder as they enter the final two rounds of the home and away season.

Vixens coach Simone McKinnis was happy with the intensity of her team after coming off the bye.

"It is always a danger game because coming back to that intensity after not having it for a couple of weeks can take you by surprise," she said.

The Vixens are unbeaten on the road this year and will finish the regular season with games against Adelaide Thunderbirds and the Southern Steel in New Zealand.

With a 17 per cent buffer on the other teams, the Vixens will claim the minor premiership with two more victories, putting them in pole position to host the grand final.

"We want to get ourselves in the best position, and technically the best position is top two," said McKinnis.

"It doesn't worry me who we play or where we play ultimately, I just want to win the next game and then win the game the following Saturday and give ourselves the best preparation going into the finals."

Commonwealth Games squad members Caitlin Bassett (23 from 30) and Natalie Medhurst (17 from 23) did the bulk of the scoring for West Coast.
