The federal government would have to purchase Australian goods and services for all Commonwealth contracts under a plan by independent MP Bob Katter.
Mr Katter on Monday introduced a private member's bill to mandate that Commonwealth procurements are met by products at least 75 per cent Australian made.
The bill would ensure the continuation of industries vital to strategic defence capabilities, like submarines, he told parliament.
