Struggling surfwear retailer Billabong has appointed ex-Nordstrom executive Jim Howell as its new chief financial officer to replace Peter Myers.

Mr Howell, who has spent the past 10 years leading the finance and treasury division at US retail giant Nordstrom, will be based in California and takes up his new role on June 12.

Billabong chairman Ian Pollard said Mr Howell brought significant retail sector experience to the company and would provide "strong oversight".

Billabong announced a first-half loss of $16.1 million in February - widening from a $1.6m loss in the first half of 2015/16.

The retailer gave full-year continuing operations earnings guidance of $52 million to $57 million - adjusted from earlier guidance of $60m to $65m to account for the loss of earnings from its Tigerlily swimwear business, which was sold in February.
