Former cabinet minister Bruce Billson will retire at the next federal election.

Mr Billson called it quits on his 20-year parliamentary career on Tuesday, telling his colleagues it was the right time to go.

"After two decades in public life, my family and I have reflected on circumstances following the change of leadership and decided it is the right time to `hang up the campaign RM Williams'," he said in a statement.

"It has become clear to us that while I love what I do, it is not possible for me to fully do what I love."

Despite losing the small business portfolio to Kelly O'Dwyer in a ministerial reshuffle, Mr Billson said he was committed to doing all he can to support the Turnbull government.

"And to ensuring the talented new ministerial team has maximum opportunity for clear air and a sure-footed start."

Doing this meant curtailing a disposition to "seek to lead, strongly advocate and implement policy initiatives and reform ideas".

Mr Billson, who will see out this term of parliament, thanked the Dunkley community for its trust in him over the years.

He also expressed sincere appreciation to his "sweetheart" Kate, children and staff.

"I have loved these days and make public this decision with no regret, remorse or bitterness," he said.

His decision follows the resignation of former treasurer Joe Hockey.
