Bimini airport to gets regular night

An airport upgrade at Bimini is part of a major development that some say will overwhelm the small island chain in the Bahamas.

A resort company says it has completed an airport upgrade on Bimini that will allow the night flights to the small island chain in the Bahamas.

Resorts World Bimini says new lights and instrumentation will allow the first regular night-time service for the islands east of Florida.

Company President Dana Leibovitz says the runway will be lengthened to 6,000 feet in the coming months to allow for larger planes.

Bahamian Prime Minister Perry Christie was expected to land on the first night flight on Thursday.

The airport upgrade is part of a development that some say will overwhelm Bimini.

Resorts World plans to open a 350-room hotel by October and a ferry for a Miami-based cruise ship in July.

Resorts World is a unit of Malaysia-based Genting Group.
