The foreign minister said Syria's worsening civil war is now in its fourth year under President Bashar al-Assad, who is expected to win the presidential election on June 3.

“No credible election could be held under the conditions in Syria,” she said.

“While the Assad regime collects ballots from government-controlled areas, it continues to bomb civilian neighbourhoods and deny millions of Syrians food and medicine.”

Ms Bishop said Australia had repeatedly called for an inclusive political process to help end the conflict and would use its seat on the Security Council to maintain pressure on the Syrian regime.

Her comments follow those made by the likes of NATO head Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who called the election "a farce".
