Bishop increases aid to the Philippines

Julie Bishop has announced $10 million in humanitarian assistance for the Philippines after Typhoon Haiyan.

Australia has pledged $10 million in aid for the typhoon-ravaged Philippines.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced the new funding at a press conference in Canberra on Monday.

"The loss of life, the damage to property and homes has been absolutely devastating," Ms Bishop said.

"This is a disaster on a massive scale."

Ms Bishop says the pledge had been gratefully welcomed by the Philippines government, but Australia stood ready to give more help if it was required.

Of the new money, $4 million will be deployed through a United Nations flash appeal and $3 million through Australian non-government organisations on the ground.

The rest will be spent on the urgent deployment of a medical assistance team and further non-food aid like tarpaulins and mosquito nets

The money adds to the $400,000 in immediate aid that Ms Bishop announced at the weekend.

Ms Bishop denied the $10 million package was too modest given the scale of the destruction.

"This $10 million is on a scale with other countries," she said.

Asked if Australian troops would also provide assistance, Ms Bishop said there had been no request for such help so far.

"At this stage, it's still too early to say," she said.

"We stand ready to assist if more is required."

Ms Bishop said there were no indications of Australian casualties beyond the death of former NSW priest Kevin Lee.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has written to Philippine's President Benigno Aquino to pass on Australia's condolences after the storm that is believed to have killed more than 10,000 people.

DFAT says Australians concerned for the welfare of family and friends in the region should first attempt to contact them directly.

If that is unsuccessful they should call DFAT's 24-hour Consular Emergency Centre on 1300 555 135 or +612 6261 3305.
