Excluding the PM and leader of the opposition, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is Australia's most recognised politician, followed by soon-to-be-gone Clive Palmer, Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce and Tasmanian Independent Jacqui Lambie.

Australia's least known politician is Transport and Infrastructure Minister Darren Chester, recognised by just four per cent of respondents in a new survey.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Nigel Scullion, was recognised by seven per cent.

The survey, conducted by the Australia Institute, polled 1437 Australians between May 23 and June 3, asking whose names they recognised from lists of politicians and ministers.

The prime minister and leader of the opposition were not included in the poll.

Ms Bishop led with an overall recognition rating of 84 per cent, rising to 90 per cent for coalition supporters.

Mr Palmer was recognised by 81 per cent, Mr Joyce by 73 per cent and Ms Lambie by 68 per cent.

Queensland independent Bob Katter was quite well-recognised (65 per cent) as was Independent Senator Nick Xenophon (64 per cent).

Worrying for the Greens, their leader Richard Di Natale was only familiar to 33 per cent, still better than Environment minister Greg Hunt on 29 per cent.

It gets worse from there. Australia's first female Defence Minister Marise Payne was recognised by 18 per cent and by just 12 per cent of female respondents.

Eleven per cent of the respondents recognised none of the MPs while nine per cent recognised not one of the ministers.
