Bishop offered tinfoil hat for Kiwi theory

Labor MP Rob Mitchell has brought a tinfoil hat to parliament, saying Foreign Minister Julie Bishop needs it to accompany her conspiracy theories.

Julie Bishop is known for her fashionable outfits but Labor thinks there's one thing missing from her wardrobe - a tinfoil hat.

For two days the foreign minister has spruiked a conspiracy theory that involves the Labor and Labour parties on both sides of Tasman bringing down the Turnbull government by unmasking Barnaby Joyce's New Zealand citizenship.

"What we've seen is the potential alternative prime minister in Julie Bishop just go right off track and lose the plot," opposition backbencher Rob Mitchell told reporters in Canberra, as he brandished his handmade creation.

"At the end of the day the issue with Barnaby Joyce is himself, his laziness, his incompetence and if he had any decency he'd do the right thing, the same at Matt Canavan, and stand down immediately."

Labor colleague Terri Butler followed up by wondering if Australia should be stationing the navy in Sydney Harbour.

"Just to make sure that this vast international conspiracy is not leaving us defenceless," she said.

"I've watched some All Blacks games in my time ... and I do think we need to take this threat very seriously because that haka, I tell ya, it's pretty intimidating," Ms Butler deadpanned to reporters.
