Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has paid tribute to Lee Kuan Yew, describing him as a political giant.

The first prime minister of Singapore has died, aged 91.

"The passing of a giant like Lee Kuan Yew is the end of an era," Ms Bishop told Sky News on Monday.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said it was thanks to Mr Lee's vision and determination that Singapore had become one of the world's most successful countries.

"Here in Australia and beyond, leaders sought and learned from his wise counsel," he said in a statement.

Australia would continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Singapore as the region saluted one of its giants, he said.
