Bishop supports early Thai elections

Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop says she hopes Thailand's early elections will ease its political tensions.

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop says she hopes next year's elections in Thailand will ease its political tensions.

Ms Bishop expressed the message on Wednesday in a brief statement with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra calling an early election for February 2014.

Ms Bishop noted that Thailand had been grappling with major political challenges and said she "appreciated" the way authorities had allowed peaceful demonstrations and responded in a restrained manner.

Ms Bishop encouraged all parties to resolve their political differences through peaceful democratic processes and with respect for the rule of law.

She reiterated that Thailand had Australia's goodwill and support as it tried to find ways to settle its difficulties.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Smartraveller advice for Thailand urges Australians to avoid all demonstrations and large-scale gatherings, and monitor developments that might affect their safety.
