Foreign Minister Julie Bishop will represent Australia at US President Barack Obama's State of the Union address on Wednesday.

Ms Bishop will attend the Washington annual address in which Mr Obama will outline his domestic and foreign policy to both houses of Congress.

The foreign minister flew out on Monday for what she calls a long visit to Washington and New York where she will address a string of conferences and open the Anzac Centenary Exhibition at the Australian embassy.

She'll also help showcase Australian innovation, technologies and business capabilities at a range of promotional events called G'Day USA.

Wednesday's speech to Congress will be Mr Obama's penultimate State of the Union address.
