The Australian government has welcomed reports that two of the Bali Nine could have their death sentences commuted on the recommendation of Indonesian prison authorities.

Kerobokan prison governor Farid Junaedi has recommended Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan have their sentences reduced to life in jail, as part of Independence Day nominations for well-behaved inmates.

Other members of the group could have their life sentences commuted to a fixed term of 15-20 years after being put forward by Junaedi.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop particularly welcomed moves to commute the death sentences of Chan and Sukumaran.

"We support those and we also support the efforts of other members of the Bali Nine to have their sentences reduced," Ms Bishop told ABC radio.

The Bali Nine were convicted over a 2005 heroin trafficking plot.

Ringleaders Sukumaran and Chan appealed for clemency from Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono two years ago.
