Black Caps batsman Ross Taylor has been cleared to play the second cricket Test against Pakistan after seeing a second eye specialist in Hamilton.
But he will then need surgery, which means he will miss the Chappell-Hadlee series in December in Australia.
The 32-year-old right-hander has been battling an eye condition that has worsened over the past 12 months and had been in doubt for the Test beginning on Friday at Seddon Park.
Team physiotherapist Tommy Simsek says Taylor's left eye has a form of scarring and, while it needs attention, it is not yet impacting on his sight.
"Ross has a pterygium on his left eye, which is gradually getting bigger," Simsek said.
"Both the specialists he has seen in recent days have advised Ross still has 20/20 vision and Ross himself feels confident he is ready to play."
Taylor will require surgery after the Test, which means he will be out for four to six weeks.
Since the tour of Zimbabwe in August, the former skipper has scored 103 runs in 10 innings at an average of less than 12.
He played little part in the eight-wicket first Test win in Christchurch, scoring 11 in the first innings and not batting in the second, with Henry Nicholls promoted to No.4 as New Zealand closed in on their winning target.
