Kane Williamson hopes a change of format and the introduction of three fresh faces can revitalise his side ahead of the one-day series against India.
The Black Caps skipper admits his side needs a boost after their 3-0 Test trouncing from the hosts, completed on Tuesday with a 321-loss inside four days in Indore.
Twelve of the 15-strong Test squad remain for the five-match ODI series beginning in Dharamsala on Sunday.
Heading home are batsman Henry Nicholls, spinner Jeetan Patel and seamer Neil Wagner, with their places taken by paceman Tim Southee and allrounders Corey Anderson and Anton Devcich.
Southee was part of the original Test squad but was forced home prematurely with an ankle injury.
"It's nice to have some new personnel coming in all fresh," Williamson said.
"And the guys are looking forward to the change in format but there'll be a little bit of scarring coming out of a 3-0 Test defeat."
Williamson says there shouldn't be the uncertainty surrounding their approach to batting which dogged them during the Test series.
They struggled to find a good balance between attack and defence against the world class Indian spinners on wearing pitches.
"You always want to be positive in what you do but there were times when we were over-positive," he said.
"But if guys were to sit there and defend, I don't know if that's the answer either.
"(In ODIs) We know that when we do play with that freedom, we play our best cricket."
India's squad has changed considerably, with no place in the ODI group for offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who toyed with the tourists through the Test series.
Only five players have been retained, including star batsman Virat Kohli.
Kohli is demoted from captain to vice-captain, with veteran wicketkeeper MS Dhoni taking the helm.
