Blackadder backs Chiefs to defend title

The Chiefs boast the quality to win back-to-back Super Rugby crowns, according to vanquished Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder believes the Chiefs will defend their Super Rugby title, although it won't be against the opposition he expected.

Blackadder was asked to assess the Chiefs' hopes of going back to back following his team's dramatic 20-19 semi-final loss in Hamilton on Saturday.

His answer came before the second semi-final was played in Pretoria, where the Brumbies toppled the favoured Bulls 26-23.

That clearly wasn't a result Blackadder had anticipated as - unprompted - he outlined to journalists where he thought the Bulls would pose a challenge to the Chiefs next week.

Given the benefit of hindsight, it's unlikely Blackadder would change his stance on the Chiefs' prospects, given the standards they set last year and have maintained throughout 2013.

"It will really depend on how much this game took out of them because it was a tough, physical encounter," Blackadder said.

"But you'd have to say that home ground advantage will put the Chiefs ahead.

"They were really clinical and played some really smart rugby."

Blackadder has his own problems to address after guiding the Crusaders to the playoffs for a fifth successive season but once again failing to add to their seven titles.

His involvement next year is in doubt as his contract is up for renewal.

Next year's side is likely to be without their star All Blacks first five-eighth Dan Carter, who is set to invoke a clause in his contract to take a six-month break from rugby.

One player who is confirmed not to return next year is wing Tom Marshall, who is leaving for the Chiefs.
