Blackout follows Victoria powerline fault

Thousands of Victorians have been left without power after a powerline fault at a substation in a Latrobe Valley town.

Electricity is being restored after about 80,000 Victorians lost power due to an explosive powerline fault in a Gippsland town.

SP AusNet spokesman Jonathon Geddes said the powerline fault caused a large flashover, smoke and a cracking noise near the Morwell Terminal Station about 7.30am (AEDT) on Friday.

About 15,000 people are still without power around Morwell and east of Bairnsdale.

Crews are working to reconnect the power supply.
