Blackouts hit Tas amid flood warnings

Tasmanians are sandbagging their properties against floods and preparing for a night with no electricity.

Wild weather continues to cause blackouts in Tasmania, as communities in the state's north face possible flash flooding.

As 900 homes in Scottsdale had their power reconnected on Wednesday night, another 1000 homes lost electricity in Verona Sands in the state's south.

Flood warnings have been issued for all northern river basins and a sandbagging effort is being co-ordinated out of Young Town on Launceston's outskirts.

The SES is providing sandbags to business owners in Kings Meadows, also near Launceston.

"The Kings Meadows area is a known area for flash flooding and there is a risk that flooding may occur within the next 24 hours," SES regional manager Mhairi Revie said on Wednesday.

"We've handed out about six pallets of sandbags ... we've got about 4000 bags and we're making more constantly."

TasNetworks spokeswoman Fiona Armstrong-Bunker said some homes were without power south of Huonville, and residents were warned the power might be out overnight.

"There may be long delays restoring power to these customers and the TasNetworks customer team is trying to call those who may be without power tonight," Ms Armstrong-Bunker said.

"More bad weather is forecast for tonight and tomorrow so we are asking people to prepare as best they can - have torches to hand, charge mobile devices."

The Bureau of Meteorology says some regions had up to 65mm of rainfall in the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday, and more significant falls are expected in the following 36 hours.

Emergency crews in Tasmania's northwest spent Wednesday mopping up and repairing buildings.

Storms with violent gusts caused pockets of damage in Burnie, Turners Beach and Devonport early on Tuesday.

About 70 to 80 properties were damaged as roofs were lifted and tree limbs snapped off.

One man suffered minor injuries when a wall collapsed on him.
