At least three people have been killed and 15 injured as a powerful explosion derailed a train in central Pakistan, officials say.

The Khushhal Khan Khattak Express was going from the northwestern city of Peshawar to the southern port city of Karachi when it was hit by a blast from explosives planted on the track, district officer Ghazi Amnaullah said.

"Three passengers were killed and another 15 were injured" in the blast in Rajanpur district of Punjab province, he said.

Three carriages out of seven overturned in the explosion.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Rajanpur borders restive Balochistan province, where Baloch separatists have frequently targeted government installations.
