Sepp Blatter's career with world football's governing body FIFA began in 1975 as a technical director.
He was general secretary for 17 more years, then rose to the presidency in 1998.
Despite his 17-year reign being littered with allegations of fraud, money laundering, racketeering and bribery involving FIFA, he had a remarkable ability to side step controversy.
