Blind SA lawyer posthumously wins award

Selvie Demiri, a blind lawyer, has been honoured posthumously for her efforts to promote access to justice, particularly for disadvantaged people.

A legal aid lawyer, who was blind but still managed a busy court schedule, has been posthumously awarded one of South Australia's top legal gongs.

Selvie Demiri, who worked for the Legal Services Commission for eight years before her death in 2014, has won the Law Society's Justice Award for her efforts to promote access to justice, particularly for socially and economically disadvantaged people.

As a legal aid lawyer, Selvie strived for excellence and achieved it, the commission said in a statement on Saturday.

"This award is proof of that and demonstrates her success in carrying out all the duties of a legal practitioner with a busy court schedule with extraordinary skill, passion and application." it said.

Commission director Gabrielle Canny said some doubted Ms Demiri's chances of working as a defence lawyer but she proved them wrong.

As a professional, and as a person, she was remarkable, Ms Canny said.
