Michael Matthews' rivals all knew what he was up to and no-one could stop him.

The rising Australian cycling star known as "Bling" sparkled in stage five at the Tour of Spain, scoring the biggest win of his career so far.

This is also the Grand Tour debut for the 22-year-old and compatriot Cameron Wurf wrote on Twitter that the win showed Matthews' class.

"Best bit about @blingmatthews big win was the whole bunch knew all day he was gunning 4 it & nobody could do a thing to stop him #pureclass," wrote Wurf, who is riding for the Cannondale team at the Vuelta.

Matthews, who is in his first year with Australian team Orica-GreenEDGE, won a bunch sprint for the stage win ahead of Maximiliano Ariel Recheze (Lampre) and Gianni Meersman (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).

"After a few moments, it sunk in what I had really done," Matthews said in a team statement.

"A few tears came out after that.

"The team was super impressive today - they did their job perfectly so I could do mine."

Matthews was also third in stage four and when Orica-GreenEDGE missed the early break, they worked hard to help set up the sprint finish for him.

"The beauty about being the guy for the sprint is that I didn't have to worry about the chase," Matthews said.

"My job was to follow the wheels in front of me and keep my mind clear and focused on my job at the end of the stage.

"The team's job was to bring back the break. I trusted them to do their job, and they trusted me to do mine.".

The break worked hard to stay away, but was caught with 3km left.

Matthews launched his final sprint with about 200m left and stayed clear for the win.

He has had the nickname "Bling" since his junior racing days.

"Aged 16 or 17, I rocked up to a race, I had three golden chains, tattoos, several jewels, so one of my good friends came up with this nickname," he said.

"I have to keep it rolling I guess and get more jewels for myself."
