Blue Mountains blood trail mystery solved

A young man who cut his hand, leaving a trail of blood in the Blue Mountains, is sorry about the fuss he caused.

A trail of blood that prompted police to establish a crime scene in the NSW Blue Mountains is not as sinister as first thought.

Police say social media has played a role in finding a young man who had cut his hand.

The line of blood was discovered on Saturday afternoon near Wentworth Falls on a service road off the Great Western Highway.

Forensic testing determined the blood was human and DNA testing was carried out to try to determine a potential victim while local hospitals were checked.

Blue Mountains police say their Facebook followers helped to sort out events.

Local Area Command Duty Officer Inspector Sonya Tabor says they have spoken to a man who was travelling to Queensland.

"The 22-year-old told us he cut his hand while on a night out and went to seek medical treatment," Inspector Tabor said on Sunday.

"Apart from being a little embarrassed at the fuss he is in good spirits and reasonable health while continuing his trip north."
