The goals remain the same for Carlton, even though their AFL season has unravelled.
The Blues will try to end a five-game losing streak on Sunday when they play St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.
Carlton haven't been awful - their biggest losing margin in the last five weeks has been 28 points.
But earlier this week Mick Malthouse bemoaned their lack of talent.
Malthouse also had some pointed comments about key players Jarrad Waite and Jeff Garlett, who remain in the VFL.
While they are only one game ahead of the last-placed Saints, coaching director Rob Wiley said Carlton were not writing off the season.
"We just have to go into each game with a positive belief that we can win," he said.
"What are we trying to get out of this season? We're trying to get a team that is playing good, consistent, sustained football.
"We've shown this year in periods that we can serve it up to the best - what we have to learn is to do that consistently over four quarters.
"The players still have that great, strong belief that we can turn it around."
Likewise, the Blues will not gift games to youngsters.
Carlton recalled Simon White and Tom Bell, but Nick Holman was named as an emergency as he waits for his senior debut.
"Obviously there are a certain things that we're really trying to push and set some good foundations," Wiley said.
"So they need to display at VFL level ... that they're able to fulfil those requirements.
"If they do, definitely it's to our advantage that they get a taste at the next level.
"But they won't be handed a jumper if they don't deserve it."
The Saints made five changes this week, losing veteran Lenny Hayes (groin) and Jimmy Webster (foot).
Adam Schneider, Farren Ray, Trent Dennis-Lane, Dylan Roberton and Sam Dunell come into their side.
The vagaries of the draw mean it is only six matches since these two teams last played.
In round eight, the Blues beat St Kilda by 32 points.
