Blues back Moala to do community work

Blues back George Moala will do education work in the rugby community after NZ Rugby found him guilty of serious misconduct.

Blues midfield back George Moala will do 40 hours of community and education work after the New Zealand Rugby found that his involvement in an Auckland bar brawl amounted to serious misconduct.

Moala was discharged without conviction in May after a jury had found him guilty of assault with intent to injure when punching a man during the incident in December 2012.

NZR general manager of rugby Neil Sorensen said the national body had completed its misconduct process with the player.

Sorensen said the conclusion was that Moala's conduct and the damage to his, the Blues' and rugby's reputation amounted to serious misconduct.

He said Moala accepted this and wanted to pay back the support he had received from his Super Rugby franchise and the NZR by spending 40 hours delivering community and education services to help others avoid a similar situation.

NZR had accepted the offer and would work with Moala to share his experiences to help others.

Moala, 24, was discharged without conviction when he appeared in Auckland District Court for sentencing on May 6, but was order to pay $2500 in reparation to his victim for emotional harm.
