Blues lock out to maintain form

Blues lock Patrick Tuipulotu senses the expectations on him have risen on his return to Super Rugby after his call-up for the All Blacks.

Lock Patrick Tuipulotu's Test experience runs to a matter of minutes, but he knows the spotlight on him has increased as he returns for the Blues.

In his rookie Super Rugby season, Tuipulotu's physicality and athleticism earned him a call-up to the All Blacks against England.

He came on in the 76th minute of both the second and third Tests of a 3-0 sweep.

He says his first two caps have made him hungry for more, but also aware he had to put in the performances to maintain his spot.

"The expectation on me is that I have to play another level up now," he said.

"Week-in and week-out, more people will be watching, so I've got to perform."

Tuipulotu has been helped by rubbing shoulders with the likes of Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick over the past three weeks.

Observing how they operated had definitely advanced the Christchurch-born 21-year-old's rugby education.

"You watch these guys play and it's unreal how good they are in person, and how professional they are, like Sam Whitelock calling the line-out," he said.

"I try to take a few things off him in that area, and Brodie Retallick in the break-down is ruthless and I learnt a lot from him."

Tuipulotu was part of a six-strong Blues contingent in the All Blacks squad and coach Sir John Kirwan expects to have all available for selection against the Western Force in Perth on Saturday night.

With three rounds to go, the Blues are 10th on the table and still have a mathematical chance of making the play-offs.

But facing them are teams that have plenty to play for themselves - the Force (seventh), Crusaders (third) and two-time defending champions the Chiefs (eighth).

With just one of those matches at Eden Park, they also have to overcome their inability to win away from home, something they last achieved in February of last year.
