Wade Graham and Jack Bird could be called on to slot into dummy-half for NSW during State of Origin I.
NSW coach Laurie Daley is heading into Wednesday night's series opener in Brisbane with the plan to play Peats - the only recognised No.9 in his squad - for the full 80 minutes.
But with question marks about Peats' ability to go the distance, the Blues are prepared to use utility Bird and back-rower Graham as a contingency.
Both have trained at dummy-half during the week and could be asked to step in with the game on the line in the final minutes, despite having never been selected there.
Bird this week admitted hooker and prop were the only two positions he had never played, but was prepared to do the job for Daley should he be required.
Daley also has back-rower Josh Jackson, who has proven a Mr Fix It in the past for Canterbury coach Des Hasler.
"We'd like to see (Peats) get through 80 but it will depend on how he's travelling," Daley said.
"If he does need a spell, I've got an option there in Birdy or possibly Wade Graham.
"Both of those guys have spent some time at dummy-half.
"And if we need to, we can throw one of those guys in. But the plan is to play Peatsy 80 if he can get through it."
