The collision that has put Team Vesta Wind out of the Volvo Ocean Race left a gaping hole in the stern of the sloop.
It is stranded on a reef in the Indian Ocean after the accident last weekend.
Australian skipper Chris Nicholson and his crew stayed with the boat for three days before they were evacuated to Mauritius by fishing boat.
The sloop was sailing in pitch darkness when it came to a crunching halt.
There were no major injuries, but the crew members were clearly shaken.
During their three-day wait with the boat they were on lookout for sharks.
The 65-foot boat smashed into the coral rock at 19 knots - the equivalent of 35km/h - before spinning 180 degrees and crashing to a halt, grounded on the reef.
The bottom of the stern was ripped away from the boat.
The team's main sponsors, Vestas said they were now focused on returning to the race which will continue until the end of June 2015.
"I'm really disappointed of course (but) on the other hand, we have to realise how fortunate we are for everyone to be here in one piece, and to be healthy," Nicholson said after they arrived in Mauritius.
