Boat capsizes, killing 12 in Thailand

A boat has capsized in central Thailand, killing 12 and injuring more than 20, police say.

A boat carrying more than 100 passengers capsized after colliding with a foundation pillar in Thailand's Ayutthaya province, 67km north of Bangkok.

The death toll may rise as the rescue mission continues, local police said.

Passengers were reportedly Muslim locals traveling from the province of Nonthaburi to Ayutthaya for an annual Islamic rite.

The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed but overloaded capacity cannot be ruled out, local authorities said.
