Boat fumes put Vic kids in hospital

Three Victorian children are in hospital after fumes from the boat they were on overcame them in regional Victoria.

A young boy has saved his baby brother from serious carbon monoxide poisoning after boat fumes filled their vessel in regional Victoria.

Two primary school aged boys and a baby were taken to Bairnsdale Regional Hospital after paramedics were called to a boat in Lakes Entrance.

One of the boys noticed his baby brother was limp and sick, and took him to their mother, who realised they were all suffering from inhaling the engine fumes.

Paramedics were called to the boat at 8.50am on Tuesday once the boys' parents realised what was going on.

Intensive care paramedic Mark Phillips said the baby became limp and was dropping into unconsciousness when his brother noticed it.

"One of the boys actually took the baby up to the front end of the boat to show mum, and mum realised how sick the young one was," he said.

"(She) looked at the other boys and realised that they started having headaches and their eyes were rolling back in the back of their head."

Mr Phillips said the boys had been overcome by fumes from the engine starting, but once they got out into the fresh air they recovered well.

The Country Fire Authority tested the air on the boat and gave it the all clear.
